Living With and Managing Anxiety

Anxiety affects many individuals and has many different effects. Some of the effects and symptoms can range anywhere from a minor nuisance to a debilitating condition. Whether anxiety puts up roadblocks or speed bumps in a person’s life it is never an enjoyable experience. There are of course many things that someone suffering with this condition can do to make it better. The best advice I can give to anyone dealing with this condition is to change as little as you can and take as little medication as you can to manage it, just enough to take the edge off and make your life bearable. Overcompensation in any area of treatment not just medication, even lifestyle changes can have drastic side effects or make your condition worse.

Most doctors will describe anxiety as with any other disorder in the brain, as a chemical imbalance. More specifically anxiety has to do with the neurotransmitter GABA which has many functions, of which slows down the rate at which your neural impulses fire. In simpler terms, someone with anxiety has a deficiency of GABA in their brain and because of this their brain will tend to overstimulate itself which can cause thousands of symptoms of anxiety. A severe GABA deficiency can eventually cause someone to have seizures, not to say that anxiety causes seizures. It is for this reason that the most common medications given to people are tranquilizers like Xanax, Klonopin, Valium or even low doses of certain anti-depressants which all increase the amount of available GABA in the brain and thus slow down the neural impulses. For someone with lower or more infrequent anxiety, Xanax is usually a good option although it has a high potential for addiction. For someone who needs to be medicated regularly, anti-depressants are the safest route because they are the least addictive but those of us who don’t respond well to anti-depressants or the many side effects that come with them, tranquilizers like Klonopin or Valium are much better because they last much longer and enter and exit the body much slower making it much less addictive but nonetheless very effective. As I said before however, any medication no matter how good its benefits are will have side effects, so it is best to take the smallest amount possible and maintain what your take on a normal life is.

More natural remedies that are also extremely effective are cutting out as much caffeine and stimulants as possible, exercising more frequently, and generally just staying more active. Nothing is worse for anxiety or any other medical problem than sitting at home thinking about it all day. Anxiety may take parts of your life away from you that you enjoy, like someone who has social anxiety but is afraid of concerts so they can no longer enjoy their favorite band live. Challenging yourself to do things that you fear or that you feel anxiety has caused a detriment to can make anxiety much easier to cope with without the use of medication. Counseling, although expensive can also be very helpful.

Anxiety is an awful feeling that I wish upon no one, not even my worst enemies. Unfortunately about one fifth of our population in the United States will spend a portion of their life with this horrible condition. Describing anxiety to someone that doesn’t have it is near impossible, but if you are one of the unfortunate people that do have it you can take comfort knowing that you are not alone and that you can always make it better than it is now.
